It may be shocking to hear from this site, but baby steps are not always appropriate. You may, for example, need to finish something big by a deadline. But here are two places where baby steps help:

  1. When it’s something simple. This may not even be technically classified as a baby step, since you’re finished so quickly. But even these tasks can be hard to do. I don’t know how I would know this, but perhaps a task like this would include sorting and putting away socks. The important thing is to get started (and finished!).
  2. A bigger task, which requires momentum. Sometimes you just need to start, and then continue at the same time. For example, you may need to exercise, so start with a minute or two. Other times you can accomplish a bit at a time, and then continue at a later date. Examples include writing an article or preparing for a Toastmasters speech.
